Health and Safety issues are key issues that are addressed by governmental and research efforts. Therefore, in Europe many activities are ongoing in the fields of environmental, health and safety research (EHS). Since its foundation, BioNanoNet has particularly addressed health and safety issues in a physiological context and has invested significant efforts in nano-health research (ref. to the already finished nano-health project).

In 2012, the Austrian government joined resources of several Federal Ministries to implement the NANO EHS program to which BioNanoNet was, and is, actively contributing. In addition to this, BioNanoNet structured the Austrian research community in the field of nanomedicine and has established a strong group in the field of nanosafety, focussing on human safety.

Furthermore, BioNanoNet is working on structuring the nano-environmental research community in Austria to bring together the key players in this field and to make a step forward toward a broader understanding of the impact of nanotechnology on humans and the environment.

As the population of Europe ages, higher expectations for a better quality of life arise. An important factor of higher life quality is the provision of improved, more efficient and affordable health care. The population is confronted with severe illnesses such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes, cancer and inflammatory and infectious diseases. By focussing on these medical problems, nanotechnology can offer impressive solutions. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) for early diagnosis, imaging and ‘smart’ drug delivery systems (i.e., “Nanocargo”) ensures better and more highly personalized health care. The research project Nano-Health aims to develop a platform for novel multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) for use in:

  • the targeted delivery of active substances for the treatment of severe and chronic diseases by various application routes
  • nanodiagnostics - NPs act as contrast media for clinical imaging via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear imaging by PET/SPECT
  • clinical applications, including the improved detection of atherosclerotic vascular lesions, stem cell tracking, as well as cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • toxicological studies of nanostructured materials


Due to the broad expertise of BioNanoNet and its partners in the fields of medical and pharmaceutical research, particularly in the field of risk and safety of nanotechnologies, BioNanoNet takes on the role of partner to answer questions about the regulatory aspects of Nanotechnologies, Nanosafety and Nanomedicine. As a service for its members, BioNanoNet provides expertise to support research projects in these areas. The competences will be reinforced and improved through these projects, such as in the field of regulatory expertise, which shall be addressed to significantly increase the chances of project proposal funding.
