Short summary: We investigated the influence of different monocyte isolation protocols and storage on the relative abundance of monocyte subsets. Overnight incubation of isolated monocytes induced a change in the monocyte subset distribution towards CD14++CD16+ intermediate monocytes, which were also the main binding partners of platelets and platelet-derived extracellular vesicles. Our data propose the involvement of platelet EVs in the induction of CD16 expression on monocytes.

Short summary: The study aimed to investigate the influence of antibiotic pre-treatment on the re-covery of pathogen DNA during pre-analytical pathogen enrichment by selective lysis and centrifu-gation. While antibiotic treatment did not negatively affect the recovery of pathogen DNA, call wall active antibiotics even supported the release and detection of pathogen DNA.

Short summary: The recent study investigated how the cytokine milieu of osteoarthritic knee joint reacts to hyperacute serum treatment in vitro. The study revealed that hyperacute serum treatment induces cell proliferation of osteoarthritic joint tissues and affects the cytokine milieu towards a less inflamed state.

Short summary: The study showed the occurrence of biotribocorrosion during sliding between a CoCrMo alloy and bovine articular cartilage. Cobalt concentrations of up to 22 ppb were measured in electrolyte after the tribocorrosion experiment, along with the presence of Co and Cr compounds on the cartilage surface despite the very low coefficient of friction measured. Surface analyses of CoCrMo cylinders after the experiments confirmed changes in passive layer and presence of a tri-bofilm. The experiments on cell cultures using Co containing culture medium indicated that critical concentrations of Co ions led to chondrocyte morphology changes and their apoptosis.

NanoTrust Dossier No. 52 on “Polymer Nanocomposites – Additives, properties, applications, environmental aspects” resulting from Austrian nanoEHS project NanoAdd (Feb. 2020)

NIA shares with you our new Position Paper on the terminology of 'Nanoplastics', developed with Members in response to increasing use of the term 'nanoplastics'.  The nanomaterials sector, with a voice from NIA, works hard to ensure transparency and accuracy of all aspects of safety and application to ensure consumer confidence. Use of the term ‘nanoplastics’ in isolation may risk conflating manufactured nanomaterials with all nanoscale plastic particles found in the environment and lead to all materials being viewed in a negative light. Ambiguous use of the term ‘nanoplastic’ is likely to have a detrimental impact on the global nanomaterials sector and reduce potential benefits from use of nanomaterials within products and processes.

NIA would like to thank all its Members for their contribtions towards this paper and we are pleased to share it through the links below.
