Replacing Forever Chemicals in Energy Storage Technologies – PFESS Featured in BNN QUARTERLY

Can energy storage technologies become safer and more sustainable without relying on “forever chemicals”?

In the latest BNN QUARTERLY Issue 03/2026, the PFESS project (PFAS-Free Membranes for Energy Storage and Conversion Systems) explores how seven partners from four European countries are working together to identify safer alternatives to PFAS-based materials used in energy storage technologies.

The article highlights the project’s efforts to develop and assess PFAS-free alternatives for redox flow batteries, combining material performance evaluations, toxicity testing, life cycle assessments and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles.

BNN contributes its expertise in SSbD, dissemination and stakeholder engagement, supporting the transition towards safer, more sustainable energy storage systems.
